Empty states are inventory
The quietest screens in a product — zero results, first-run tips, chat pauses — are better ad surfaces than another banner. Why text units belong there.
Most products spend months polishing the happy path and then leave the failure path naked: “No results.” “Nothing here yet.” “Start a conversation.” Those screens are not a design leftover. They are attention with a job already in mind — and almost nobody treats them as inventory.
Display networks trained a generation of teams to think of ads as rectangles that compete with the product. So the instinct is either to refuse ads entirely or to drop a 300×250 into a sidebar and hope AdSense fills. Both miss the actual surface: a sentence that belongs in the same type size as the empty-state caption.
The user is already paused
Banner blindness is not a moral failing. It is what happens when a visual format fights the chrome. Inside a product, the user is not scrolling a feed. They are stuck, waiting, or starting. That is a different psychology:
- Zero results — they wanted something the product did not have. A relevant tool or next step is a service, not clutter.
- Onboarding tip — they opted into being taught. A single sponsored line can sit beside product advice if it is labeled.
- Chat / assistant pause — the model just answered. The next token of UI can be a native recommendation, the same way a good human would mention a vendor.
- Loading or level break — time is already idle. A line beats a video pre-roll that steals the session.
These moments fail as display slots because they are small, quiet, and typographic. They succeed as text units for the same reasons.
What a text unit is not
It is not a native “content rec” module from the open web (thumbnail, clickbait headline, “Around the web”). It is not ChatGPT’s chat-UI display ads, which need a walled garden and, as of early 2026, a $250K minimum many independents will never touch. It is not reasoning-time injection that rewrites the model’s thoughts.
It is one line, a CTA, and an honest Sponsored label — generated and rotated like copy, not like a campaign microsite. Creative cost collapses. Integration is a snippet or a React Native hook. The product still looks like itself.
Why this matters for AI apps specifically
AI products mint empty states constantly: no threads yet, no documents, no agents configured, the model declined, the retrieval set was empty. Teams then debate a paywall on day one because “we cannot put ads next to the assistant.” That is a format problem, not a category problem.
If the assistant already speaks in sentences, a sponsored sentence is the least alien unit you can add. The bar is relevance and disclosure, not whether advertising is allowed in principle. Score the moment before you wire fill — that is what the score-text-placement skill is for.
Inventory you already shipped
You do not need a new surface. Audit what you already render when the database is empty or the user is waiting. If a designer wrote a helpful caption there, a text network can compete for that same line without a banner grid.
Siyaqi exists to clear that inventory: CPM, CPC, or CPA from a prepaid wallet on the demand side; a dynamic publisher share on the supply side; AI to draft the variants so nobody staffs a studio for a 12-word unit.
The next ad unit in digital products is not a better rectangle. It is a better sentence, in a place the user was already reading.
